The AANS is committed to increasing its involvement in international neurosurgery, in particular furthering educational opportunities in developing countries. One meaningful offering is the AANS International Visiting Surgeons Fellowship.  The AANS funds two observational fellowships per fiscal year to provide meaningful educational experiences in North America to international neurosurgeons who will practice and/or teach neurosurgery in their home countries.

This fellowship is an effort by the AANS to assist our colleagues in developing countries with an educational experience at a North American Neurosurgical Training Program – typically three months in duration. “Developing Countries” are determined by the World Bank’s ranking.  The list is updated each year.

Application for 2010 will begin being accepted in April 2009.

AANS Financial Support
The AANS provides each of the two recipients:

  1. $1500/monthly stipend ($4,500 if Fellowship is for three months)
  2. Reimbursement for one round trip coach airfare to Fellowship location
  3. Travel reimbursement & free registration to the AANS Annual Meeting May 1-6, 2010 in Philadelphia, PA, if recipient is serving the fellowship in North America at the time of the Annual Meeting. This includes:
    • round trip air fare/travel from their fellowship location to and from Philadelphia, PA
    • free hotel room
    • a spending stipend for the meeting
    • general registration fee for the meeting
